Progress in diagnosis and treatment of traumatic flail chest complicated with pulmonary contusion

Abstract:

Traumatic flail chest complicated with pulmonary contusion(FC-PC) is commonly occurred in emergency of chest trauma, which may cause serious conditions. Symptoms like acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and acute respiratory failure may occur in the early stage, and others such as pulmonary infection and empyema formation may appear in the later stage. FC-PC treatment may be time-consuming, with longer duration of hospitalization and larger medical expense. Poor prognosis may incur without timely diagnosis and effective treatment. The progress in diagnosis and treatment of FC-PC both in China and abroad is reviewed in this paper.
