Analysis of postoperative chronic cough and related factors of general thoracic surgery

Objective

To investigate the related factors of postoperative chronic cough of general thoracic surgery.

Methods

We observed 225 patients who underwent general thoracic surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital during July to December in 2016. A self-designed numerical rating scale (NRS) for cough was used in this research. Age, gender, disease type and surgery type were compared and analyzed in this research.

Results

200 cases were included in the research. The results of chi-square test showed that age, gender and disease type were not associated with long-term cough after operation (P>0.05). Among the 164 patients with lung-related surgery, the NRS score was significantly lower in the patients undergoing left lung surgery than in the right lung surgery (χ²=6.281, P=0.012).

Conclusions

Right pulmonary surgery may increase the risk of chronic cough after general thoracic surgery.
